Why do you need Indigenous (Native) Seeds and Plants?
- Will meet the current Federal Fisheries & Oceans, Land Claims and Environmental standards and regulations for non introduction of foreign species
- Will meet future policy and regulatory requirements
- Will maintain the ecosystem integrity of the areas bordering the project and minimize the impact of disturbance on the regional ecosystem
- Will reduce the potential to atrract animals by creating a "Wildlife Buffet"
- The indigenous seed and plant species are adapted to the harsh winter conditions, long summer daylight and drought-like conditions of a northern mine site
- Are perennial seed producers and continually reclaim the site
- They thrive because they are acclimatized to the northern "photoperiod" consisting of longer daylight in the summer, which triggers them to set seed early and are resistant to northern pests and diseases
- Establish a natural colonization process and increase the return to the surrounding ecosystem
- Require NO fertilization - eliminating additional potential pollutants
- Hydro Seeding with mulch and tackifiers is not recommended
- Reduces the long term vegetation management cost
The seeds in our collections have evolved and are adapted to the harsh site conditions and drought-like conditions present at most mining and industrial sites. Our grasses and legumes are especially suited to propagate in these adverse conditions. They thrive because they were selected for their ability to colonize a site and provide the site with the ability return to a balance with the existing and surrounding ecosystem.
Once established, indigenous (native) species require no irrigation or fertilization. They are also resistant to most pests and diseases, and will not become invasive, as many foreign species will. Native plants also balance the ecology of the site for all species, attracting other native plants, insects and wildlife.
